Rei means Spiritual Wisdom, and Ki means Energy. Reiki is a form of healing using spiritually guided Universal Life Energy. Reiki (ray-key) is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. Reiki is administered by “laying on hands” and techniques such as this have been practiced for thousands of years. Reiki is a very simple yet powerful technique that can be easily learned by anyone.
The system of Reiki was first developed in 1922 by Mikao Usui, in Japan. Dr. Usui called it Usui Reiki Ryoho (Usui method for spiritual healing). It was brought to the West in 1937 by Hawayo Takata.
What is a Reiki Session like? Reiki is administered through the hands of the Reiki practitioner with the client lying down on a massage table. Sessions typically last anywhere from 45 – 60 minutes, but shorter sessions are possible. The practitioner places his or her hands at various locations, focusing on the energy centers, or chakras, either lightly touching or slightly away from the body. Reiki energy flows from the practitioner’s hands and into the client’s body and energy field. Clients often experience feelings of relaxation, peace and well-being.
Some benefits of Reiki are muscle relaxation and reduced stress. Clients report help with headaches, insomnia, upset stomach, sprains, and other minor conditions. Reiki also promotes psychological healing, including release of anger, fear, worry, sadness, etc. Reiki energy can be sent into the past and future, so it can be helpful healing the effects of past traumas, such as PTSD. Because Reiki is guided by spiritual consciousness, it can never do harm. It knows what a person needs, and it will adjust itself to create an effect that is appropriate.
Reiki is a channeled healing, so the Reiki practitioner’s energies are not part of the session and are never depleted. In fact, the Reiki consciousness considers both practitioner and client to be in need of healing so both receive benefit.
Reiki can be used to not only treat others, but you can also treat yourself.
Reiki can be used to complement other kinds of treatment including medical and psychological care. Reiki is now being used in hundreds of hospitals across the U.S., including in operating rooms and intensive care units. It’s also used in conjunction with psychotherapy to improve the healing of emotional trauma and other issues.
While Reiki is spiritual in nature in that it provides love and compassion to the client, it is not a religion. There is no dogma, and it does not conflict with religious beliefs. In addition, it is not massage or reflexology.
Anyone can learn Reiki. It is not dependent upon intellectual understanding, nor does one have to be able to meditate. It is simply passed on through the teacher to the student during the attunement process. The ability to channel Reiki energy is transferred to the student by the Reiki Master during an attunement process. During the attunement, the Rei or spiritual consciousness makes adjustments in the student’s chakras and energy pathways and also in deeper parts of one’s consciousness to accommodate the ability to channel Reiki energy, and then links the student to the Reiki source.
